The Initial Problem

The SMF current website, provided information to 3 primary audiences public, members and recruitment agencies. The information made available was managed by SMF with the content updates being carried out by a 3rd party service provider.

Access to the members area requires login with username and password.
The SMF steering committee recognised an opportunity to provide additional features to the site and wanted to build an active online community which could encourage the exchange of information,ideas and opportunities between members.

How the Helix Team Helped

Working closely with SMF, Helix designed and built a new website with both public and extranet managed content.

The public site is includes the following features: Latest Blog postings, Newsletters, Photo Slide show, SMF of the Week, Press Articles, Additional site sections, RSS feeds, Events.

The Extranet is accessed via a login and provides members with additional information and functionality to maintain their own profiles as well as being able to contribute to a number of collaborative features for sharing information and building a active online community.

The website was developed using the Umbraco CMS solution. Much of the desired
functionality is either part of the CMS or was easily added using existing components or by developing extensions to the CMS.

Successful Outcome

Since the SMF website went live 2011 in it has become a successful central communication point for its 280 plus members. The public site has developed into a popular way for members to share news and opinion with the blog regularly featuring guest contributors.

Helix have a working support contract with SMF to maintain and update the website, keeping it fresh and current for their members.
